Christopher Paolini plans to wrap up his popular fantasy series this fall. The fourth and final book in the series will be titled Inheritance and will be out Nov. 8. In a press release, Paolini said, "The burning questions asked by my fans around the world will be finally answered in this last installment. All will be revealed!" So, are you ready for closure?

Gossip Girl author Cecily Von Ziegesar is jumping on the mash-up bandwagon this fall. She is giving her popular series a new twist by making the main characters serial killers. Gossip Girl, Psycho Killer will be a tongue-in-cheek look at "beautiful, rich girls who supposedly have everything-but they go crazy, and sardonically, killing becomes a competition between them," according to the publisher. The new book will come out in October.

Just announced- new sci fi series from Rachel Cohn

Just announced today, Rachel Cohn, author of Gingerbread and co-author of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist will be coming out with a new sci fi series starting in Fall 2012.

First book, called Beta will follow a girl and her clone on futuristic island where clones are servants. There, both girls fall in love with the same guy.

There will be four books in the series total. Let's hope it's a good one!

Move over Vampire Diaries...Teen Wolf is in town

This week, MTV released pictures and a trailer for their upcoming tv series Teen Wolf. This is a remake of the 1985 movie starring Michael J. Fox. The tv series though more resembles the style and feel of The Vampire Diaries though, not the original movie, as MTV tries to keep up with supernatural teen trend. The series will follow a teenage lacrosse player who gets bitten and then turns into a werewolf. Things get complicated when he finds out the girl he likes has a werewolf hunting dad. The show premieres next year and will run for 13 episodes.

Rick Riordan announces next Kane Chronicles novel!

Rick Riordan announced this month that second book of the Kane Chronicles series (the sequel to The Red Pyramid) will be released May 3, 2011. No title has been given yet. Riordan also plans to release his second book in the Heroes of Olympus series, titled The Son of Neptune in October 2011. He has a busy year ahead of him!

The blog has found out that The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide will come out April 12, 2011. The encyclopedia, written by Stephenie Meyer, will include "character profiles, outtakes, a conversation with Meyer, genealogical charts, maps, extensive cross-references, and much more," according to the publisher. There also will be art by Young Kim who illustrated the Twilight graphic novel. Meyer said she wanted to "incorporate as many details as possible, including character histories, like Alice's back story" in the book.

Lauren Conrad of MTV's The Hills found success as a reality star, designer and author. Now, it's Snooki's turn. Nicole Polizzi, who stars in MTV's Jersey Shore, just signed a deal to publish her first novel early next year. According to a statement, the book will "revolve around a girl looking for love on the boardwalk." Of course, the book is tentatively titled A Shore Thing.

Description: This 1949 classic is about the dystopian society occurring in the year 1984. The novel serves as a warning of a potential totalitarian government in the future. The novel details the life of Winston Smith, a citizen of one of the three world superpowers Oceania. The society which Winston lives in is ruled by the omnipotent Big Brother. Every individual is carefully monitored and dictated on what their thoughts should be. Winston quietly begins to rebel against this society as he sees the hypocrisies created by the government. This novel is chilling and intellectual. While the year 1984 has passed without the government depicted in the novel, one cannot help but draw disturbing parallels between some instances in the novel with modern society. One should definitely read this novel. Not only is it referred to often in our society’s media, the novel is also fun intellectually and will leave the reader thinking for hours after the depressing yet realistic ending.

Description: Dune, often labeled as science fiction’s best-selling novel, is about Paul Atreides, the son of Duke Leto. The Atreides clan has just lost their home planet in favor of the desert planet Arrakis. Conspirators against the Atreides plan to gain control of Arrakis (and later, the universe) and its invaluable resource of spice. Meanwhile, Paul begins to discover new powers as he starts to resemble what an ancient prophesy embodies as a superhuman. This novel, despite its acclaim, is disappointing. The novel is excessively long and predictable. The characters lack depth. Transitions between attitudes, in particular with Paul’s attitudes, are unrealistic and shallow. Relationships, even between close relatives or loved ones, are distant and unfulfilling. Perhaps my negativity stems from my small dislike of science fiction overall, but the ending is as unsatisfying as the rest of the novel.

Description: This novel is the sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and is narrated by Tom’s friend, Huckleberry Finn. Huck is a young boy who has recently acquired a fortune and is living with Widow Douglass and her sister Miss Watson. The two try to civilize Huck, but Huck resists and only decides against running away when Tom Sawyer announces he is going to make a gang of robbers. Huck is taken away from the widow when his father appears. His father brings him to the outskirts of town and beats him daily. Huck decides to fake his death and with Miss Watson’s slave, Jim, sails down the Mississippi River. Twain wrote this novel to satirize the antebellum South and does so by writing completely in the vernacular of the time and by exaggerating Southern behavior as it is encountered in the novel. He incorporates racism very casually, which both shocks the reader and makes the reader understand how societal norms were at the time. Because it is written as if Huck was the one directly telling the story, the novel is a bit difficult to read. However, this Great American Novel is worth the patience and deserves to be read.

Description: This play is based on the Scopes “Monkey” Trial. The play is about teacher Bertram Cates who intentionally breaks the law by teaching the theory of evolution to his biology class. He is put on trial with the renowned defense lawyer Henry Drummond. Brady, the prosecuting lawyer, is loved by all and the small town is already against Cates. As the trial moves to a national scale, the trial becomes an argument against the law banning the teaching of evolution. This novel is thrilling with its courtroom battles. Drummond becomes the reader’s favorite as he demonstrates his prowess in the courtroom. Questions of morals rise up and challenge the small town to rethink its values. The play is relatively short and easy to read, but the reader should take his or her time with it due to the depth the plays goes into.

Description: Jen Greenley is the "It" girl in all the magazines. Reporters want to know what color she's wearing to the Clayton High School Spring Fling, and whether she's going to wear her hair up or down. Meg Cabot's trademark charming wit and ability to capture Jen's multitude of emotions make this book a delightful read for everyone. Jen's transformation from laid-back listener to instigator of social change, with inspiration from Luke Striker, will have you cheering for everyone touched by Jen's bravery. TEEN IDOL is a story with messages concerning self-image, confidence and friendships, but Cabot always keeps it lighthearted and funny. A perfect read for summer --- or fall, or winter, or spring.

Lipsyte's experience as a sports journalist is evident by his gritty depiction of the arduous and difficult training and discipline required of a boxer; this detail lends authenticity to his story and brings the reader into the ring. Alfred struggles to improve himself, even as he doubts himself and his ability. Boxing is a way to prove to himself he has the heart of a contender, even as he is swayed by his ties to a former life. His childhood friend James is involved with a gang and battling a drug addiction and Alfred is caught between two worlds. This novel's strong protagonist and engaging story make it suitable for grades 8-12, although some teachers may even use it with younger students.

Semi and two others are the sole survivors of the crash and are now stranded of a deserted island, or so they think. They are being watched by Dr. Franklin, a mad genetic engineer, who is waiting for the right to time to make his horrible visions a reality, starting with Semi. This book is a ticking time bomb full of friendship, sacrifice, and the will to be free.

Description: The novel takes place in 1939 in Nazi Germany and is narrated by Death. Death tells the story of the book thief, Liesel Meminger. Liesel is given away by her mother to the Hubermanns, a relatively poor old couple living Himmel Street. There, Liesel begins loving relationships with her neighbors, her Papa, and books. However, danger lurks as bombs begin to drop and the Hubermanns take in a Jew. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite novels. Zusak writes darkly, humorously, and bluntly and manages to create the perfect opening to this fantastic novel. Zusak hints at historical references and produces a realistic fear of in the reader similar to the one at that time in Nazi Germany. He creates multidimensional, relatable characters that the reader creates a bond with. The novel is brilliant and deserves to be read multiple times for its ingenuity.

However, Aza doesn’t have the second quality; she isn’t pretty. She has to hide from people and stay in her parents’ inn because of her appearance. But everything changes when Aza becomes the new queen’s lady-in-waiting. She asks Aza for a dangerous and risky favor or else people’s lives will be at stake, or even the whole kingdom! It’s up to Aza to save Ayortha as well as herself!

Title of Book: The Devil in the White City
Author: Erik Larson

Description: This novel tells the story of the construction and execution of the infamous 1893 World Fair held in Chicago. The novel is centered on two individuals: Daniel Hudson Burnham, the chief architect of the Fair and H. H. Holmes, a serial killer who amazingly remains under the radar throughout the 6 month Fair. Burnham constructs the White City for the Fair despite seemingly impossible conditions and for extremely important reasons. Holmes harvests a fortune through deceit and charm, while luring unsuspecting women into his castle. While the novel is entirely nonfiction, it reads as an entertaining narrative due to Larson’s style of narration and the incredible nature of the events unfolding in the novel. The novel transports the reader to Chicago in the late 19th century and teaches the reader while entertaining him or her. While the tale of the World Fair is not usually known, the events of the Fair are shocking and absorbing.

Title of Book: Scarlett Letter
Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne

Description: Set in Puritan New England, Hester Prynne, a proud, understanding woman, has an illegitimate child and is forced to wear a scarlet A signaling that she is an Adulteress. Her husband witnesses her public shame after two years of separation and is consumed with the idea of revenge against Hester and her lover. Because Hester refuses to name her lover, her husband pretends to be a doctor for the extremely loved minister Dimmesdale while in the search of Hester’s true lover. The novel, published in 1850, has a different vernacular than the one used present day. Hawthorne writes in a rambling fashion and puts emphasis on emotions and scenery. I would recommend this novel. It has a lot of intrigue and teaches the readers of how Puritan New England society ran in terms of moral. Emotions, pride, and reputations are constantly put at risk and the novel is overall enjoyable.

Description: This epic classic tells the story of a young boy named Jim Hawkins who goes on a treasure hunt overseas when he finds a treasure map in his parents’ inn. His yearning for adventure sets him aboard the Hispaniola toward Treasure Island. However, all goes well until Jim eavesdrops in on a secret conversation on the ship. While hiding in an apple barrel, he hears the cook, Long John Silver – aka the one-legged pirate, talk to some of the men on crew about teaming up with him and stealing the treasure for themselves. Now it’s up to Jim to see if he can warn the other people on board about Silver’s plan and to save his life.

One by one Red's beneficiaries receive their portions of the multi-billion estate but when its Jason's turn to collect his inheritance, he finds that their is something completely different in his fate. Further, the story continues with Jason's year long journey to get his inheritance and see what ultimate gift he gets out of this. This is a novel of about 154 pages which would captivate the hearts of young and old.

Title of Book: A Separate Peace

Description: A Separate Peace is a coming of age novel about Gene and his stay at Devon’s prep school. It starts in the summer of 1942, in the middle of WWII, in a carefree atmosphere. Gene and his classmates have a year before they are drafted into the war, which provides them with a mixture of excitement and fear. Gene begins to harvest a jealously towards his best friend, Finny, who is impulsive, humble, and the best at sports at Devon. The carefree atmosphere is quickly disrupted as one of them has an accident and the summer session at Devon comes to a close. The novel is similar to Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye with its focus on teenagers and their small revelations of the world, but in my opinion, is much better. There is fantastic use of imagery and foreshadowing and the opening is written wonderfully. Gene is a likable character and thinks rationally and intelligently while often being the victim of common teenage troubles like jealously and fear. The book ends darkly and shockingly. The book was an overall enjoyable experience and deserves more acclaim than it is currently given.

It all began when she started having dreams of speaking to ghosts and then actually sees them in the hallways of her high school. Chloe is sent away to a group home for teens with what some called, “mental illnesses.” As Chloe quickly found out, by mental illness, they meant special abilities. This book will make chills run down your spine with every ghost and will leave you begging for the sequel The Awakening. I recommend this book for those who are not faint of heart and who crave a good thrill.

However, it is long and requires dedication to finish it.

She starts out on a bad foot because Charm ran away on her first day at Canterwood and also caused the "queen's" horse Aristocrat to run away. So, almost automatically, Sasha is hated by Heather (the queen). Life is very challenging and dramatic as Heather tries to get Sahsa kicked off of the riding team and despised by everybody at school.

Each story is touching in its own unique way and shows a different type of writing style. The stories are short but keep the reader thinking about them long after.

Burnham constructs the White City for the Fair despite seemingly impossible conditions and for extremely important reasons. Holmes harvests a fortune through deceit and charm, while luring unsuspecting women into his castle. While the novel is entirely nonfiction, it reads as an entertaining narrative due to Larson’s style of narration and the incredible nature of the events unfolding in the novel. The novel transports the reader to Chicago in the late 19th century and teaches the reader while entertaining him or her. While the tale of the World Fair is not usually known, the events of the Fair are shocking and absorbing.

Book on text messaging teens prompts most book challenges of 2009

ttyl series tops ALA's 2009 Top Ten list of most frequently challenged books

CHICAGO –Lauren Myracle’s best-selling young adult novel series ttyl, the first-ever novels written entirely in the style of instant messaging, tops the American Library Association’s (ALA) Top Ten list of the Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2009.

Two books are new to the list: Twilight (series) by Stephenie Meyer and My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult.

Both Alice Walker’s The Color Purple and Robert Cormier’s The Chocolate War return after being dropped from the list in 2008.

“Even though not every book will be right for every reader, the ability to read, speak, think and express ourselves freely are core American values,” said Barbara Jones, director of the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom. “Protecting one of our most fundamental rights – the freedom to read – means respecting each other’s differences and the right of all people to choose for themselves what they and their families read.”

For nearly 20 years, the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has collected reports on book challenges. A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school, requesting that materials be removed or restricted because of content or appropriateness. In 2009, OIF received 460 reports on efforts to remove or restrict materials from school curricula and library bookshelves.

Though OIF receives reports of challenges in public libraries, schools, and school libraries from a variety of sources, a majority of challenges go unreported. OIF estimates that its statistics reflect only 20-25% of the challenges that actually occur.

The ALA’s Top Ten Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2009 reflect a range of themes, and consist of the following titles:

Keys to the Repository, the fifth book in the very popular Blue Bloods series by Melissa De La Cruz is set to be released on June 29, 2010 - just in time for some fun summer reading! You can place a hold on Keys to the Respository at the Somerset County Library's website. And never fear, this release is not the end of this fabulous series. A sixth book called Misguided Angel is set to be released on October 5, 2010. Melissa's official website also has announced that she is working on a spin-off series to Blue Bloods focusing on Bliss Llewellyn. The first book in this series will be called Wolf Pack. Facebook Takes on SNL

Long considered to be the stomping ground of oldsters and soccer moms, Facebook took one more step toward street cred this week when it was reported that an online movement to have veteran comedian Betty White host Saturday Night Live had actually worked. Average age group of the members driven to see the 84 year old host the show? 18 to 24. Facebook estimates that over 48,000 fans of the Facebook page propelled the movement forward and gained the attention of such outlets as CNN, MTV and The Daily Show.

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting for Twi-Hards, the ten second teaser trailer for Summit Entertainment's The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is now available! The full 90 second trailer will drop online on Thursday morning at around 6:00 AM PST/9:00 AM EST. Its contents are being kept under wraps but you can find some fun commentary analyzing the 10 second clip over at MTV.

The film is slated to hit conventional theaters and IMAX on June 30, 2010.

It’s hard to avoid Jane Austen. Whether it’s from your Brit Lit class, the PBS mini-series or the countless movie adaptations, no doubt you’ve come across some version of Pride and Prejudice. Co-author Seth Grahame-Smith has re-imagined this classic novel by creating a subplot where a mysterious plague has afflicted England transforming people into flesh eating “unmentionables” (a.k.a. zombies) who roam the countryside killing and dismembering their victims. Grahame-Smith retains roughly 85% of the novel’s original text and his language and style mirrors that of Austen, making the addition of zombie mayhem relatively seamless. Whether you’re a loyal fan or zealous critic of Jane Austen, this book is definitely worth checking out.

Everyone loves Google but chances are you’re going to love it even more in the near future. That’s because Google Goggles is going to totally transform the way you search for information once again. The idea is pretty simple. Users can search the internet with images taken on their cell phones. See a book you want to buy but want to find the best price at all local store? Take a picture on your cell and Google Goggles will find you the answer by searching through billions of images stored in Google's database through a device running Android 1.6 software. Everything from logos to landmarks to artwork is all fair game. This program is still in its early stages but has proven itself in countless demos. Google also recommends taking photos in landscape mode to increase accuracy.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Grade of reviewer: 8th

Review: Grace is nearly killed by wolves at a young age. A mysterious wolf, her wolf, saves her. Years later when he becomes human, she falls in love with him. The only problem is that this is his last year being human. Will they find a cure for him in time?

Fruits Basket v. 23 by Natsuki Takaya

Grade of reviewer: 9th

A great conclusion to a long and meaningful series. You felt happen for all the characters and saw that their future was a happy one. The curse was finally broken and everyone was free!

The Best Book You Probably Haven’t Read: Going Bovine

Title: Going Bovine
Author: Libba Bray
Audience: Older Teens & Adults

This book is so far and away my favorite read from 2009 that nothing even came close. On its surface, it is a story about Cameron, a slacker teen who find his whole life thrown off balance when he is diagnosed with Mad Cow Disease. What happens next is a roller coaster ride involving Cameron, a hypochondriac dwarf, a feisty gnome, a punk rock angel and one of the craziest road trips in history. But what really makes this story so irresistible is that it can be read either as a hallucination as Cameron’s loses his brain to his disease bit by bit or as a supernatural battle between good an evil. Either way, you’ll love Cameron’s acerbic humor and root for him in his battle against death. This book is a monster clocking in at 480 pages but the characters are so well defined and unforgettable that you’ll be tempted to start rereading the minute you finish.

My other favorites of 2009: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins; Columbine by Dave Cullin; The Everafter by Amy Huntley; The Forrest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan; When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

TheOneAbout.com is a super easy program that will not only do that but much, much more. Right now it’s only in its Beta version but you can still create what is called “Tributes.” Basically these are compilation videos of friends or events. Check it out here.

Looks like ABC Family (home to 10 Things I Hate About You and Greek) is trying to turn The Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard into a TV show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is set three years after the disappearance of the manipulative and vindictive "Queen Bee" Alison. It revolves around her four 16-year-old girlfriends, Aria , Emily, Spencer and Hanna, who have lost touch with one another until each of them begins to receive mysterious messages suggesting that Alison is watching them and knows every secret they're desperate to keep. The messages don't stop even after Alison's body finally is discovered.

Guilty Pleasure Music

This time tomorrow my tween cousin and I will be on my way to the Taylor Swift concert. And I’m trying to keep a pretty low profile about it. Why? Because Taylor Swift is what I would define as a guilty pleasure. You know, those songs that you blast when you’re alone but would never admit to liking in public?

I started thinking about some of my other guilty pleasures and have compiled a playlist of sorts. Sadly these six tunes appear on my iPod and are on frequent play. All of these songs are available through your library for no charge. And don’t worry. They have plenty of other music available you won’t be embarrassed to listen to in front of your friends!

DVD Alert: Disaster Flicks

I know most people get their thrills from roller coasters in the summer but when I’m looking for an adrenaline rush, I love to hit up the library’s DVDs. I’m pretty much obsessed with disaster flicks, especially those old school films that rely less on special effects and more on tapping into the fear of the unknown and dread of the expected. These films may have been made years ago, but they definitely hold up. Below is a list of my top five favorite disaster flicks. And the best part? You can check them out and it won’t cost you a thing! So the next time you’re looking for a reason to stay in the air conditioning, pop in one of these bad boys. You won’t be disappointed!

5. The Swarm
The premise is pretty simple really: a swarm of killer bees attack the United States. But what makes this disaster flick so irresistible is the clichés and ridiculous dialogue. If you prefer humor in your disaster films, look no further.

4. Earthquake
While earthquakes and their aftermath are pretty standard fare these days, check out the movie that started it all. Charlton Heston leads a ragtag group as they try to deal with the aftermath of an earthquake that has leveled Los Angeles.

3. Poseidon
Although I still have a special fondness for the over the top acting of the original film, the Poseidon Adventure, this remake stands apart for its excellent action sequences. On New Year’s Eve is capsized by a wave trapping a group of people beneath the sea. Their only hope of survival is making their way to the water’s surface- a task made more difficult by fires, flooding and falling debris.

2. The Andromeda Strain
Based on the best selling novel by Michael Crichton, the last ten minutes of this film will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. The story starts as a remote village in New Mexico is contaminated by a satellite crash. When scientists discover the origin of the deadly matter, everything starts to unravel.

1. The Towering Inferno
On the night of its dedication, a raging fire breaks out in the world’s tallest skyscraper trapping all of the party goers inside. Paul Newman and Steve McQueen lead this all star cast with some of the most quotable film lines ever. I still think of this film every time I enter a building over five stories tall!

The 99: Superheroes You Need to Know

Move over Batman and Spiderman, the 99 are coming! Word has it that the world’s first Muslim Superheroes, the 99, are headed to British television screens as early as next year. Created by Dr. Naif al-Mutawa to counter Jihadist role models, characters include a burka-clad woman named Batina the Hidden and a Saudi Arabian Hulk-type man named Jabbar the Powerful. The show is called the 99 because each character (yes that means 99 characters!) possesses one of Allah’s 99 attributes. Given that Forbes magazine just listed the 99 as one of the top 20 trends sweeping the globe, many eyes will be on the series to gauge its potential crossover appeal with western viewers.

Last night in the kitchen of the Watchung Library, three of our teens had a blast creating candy sushi as part of a new monthly program called Teen Cafe. Take a peek at the cooking process and see the artistic snack they made!

What would sushi be without sticky rice? Observe our teens rolling out freshly made rice krispie treats to begin the sushi process:

The N, known for it's television programming for teens, will be changing their name to TeenNick starting September 28th. Here is an excerpt from their FAQ page:

Is it true that The N is going to turn into TeenNick?
Man, you are on top of this stuff! Here's what's up: This fall The N is going to change its name to TeenNick. That's all. We'll still have the same awesome shows, an awesome website, and Degrassi... we'll just have a different name and logo. We might change how things look but not how things are. The same people are still gonna work here. Basically everything here will have the same spirit, attitude, and audience that it does right now; it's just going to be called TeenNick.
